Rotel Michi Q5 CD Player
Long overdue ... this is the engineering tour de force by the dedicated audiophile engineers in Zuhai to produce a source equivalent to the wonderful Michi amplification. This looks so good ... it uses the same transport as the $60,0000 Gryphon CD Player. The top loading with puck design is the contemporary reference for a CD transport and this a beautiful iteration.
Listening to "2 Cellos" with the player straight out of the box it is immediately obvious that this is one special front end .. even to my jaded sensitivity the instruments leap into compelling solidity in the space in front of the loudspeakers and it is thrilling. This and the new Marantz Model 10 are the disc spinners of our time.
The Q5 isn't just for playing CDs; it can also play hi-res digital files directly or from another source. It has optical and coaxial inputs (that can handle 24-bit/192kHz PCM files), while a type B USB port can handle up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM, DSD and MQA files. There is an ethernet port at the rear panel, but this is for integration with automated systems and downloading album artwork, rather than facilitating any network streaming over your home's internet. The Q5's sleek, substantial build matches the rest of the Michi line and it has a full-colour TFT display to show off album artwork and information.
